I became known for my mahi in business writing - teaching people to ditch the corporate bullshit and write like actual humans. And while I can absolutely still do that work, my focus has shifted to something that fires me up even more: showing up as Māori. Ao noa, pō noa.
I've spent decades deconstructing all the things that were holding me back - the colonial conditioning, the religious programming, the belief that I had to sound "professional" to be taken seriously. At 37, I walked away from five generations of conservative Christianity and started the journey back to my tūpuna and forward into my own joy. I got my moko kauae, reclaimed my great-great-grandmother's name, Miraka, and immersed myself in te reo Māori - the language lost in my whānau for 3 generations.
Now my passion is creating spaces where our reo can thrive. I'm opening Rumaki Cafe in Rotorua. It isn't just a cafe - it's a revolution wrapped in good kai and great kōrero. It's about normalising te reo Māori, creating āhurutanga for our people, and showing that our language belongs everywhere, not just in formal settings. Because when we know ourselves - our whakapapa, our values, our truth - we can build the kind of connections that change everything.
The business writing was just the beginning, e hoa mā. It's where I found my voice and my power. This is where my heart lives now - reclaiming what's been lost and inspiring others to do the same!
