My background is in education, as a kaiāko/kaihautu in special character schools, Katorika and Māori (30 years), and as a special education advisor and kaimātai hinengaro with te Te Tāhuhu o te Matauranga (24 years). I officially retired from paid employment in 2025.
I am a mum of three tamariki and three mokopuna and we are passionate about equity and justice for our tamariki, mokopuna, pakeke in all aspects of their learning.
I am an avid consumer (passive and active) of Te Ao Māori Kaupapa, locally and across the globe. My interest in Theology, Sociology, Philosophy specifically, and all the sciences 'developed early' when I was growing up in Whakarapa, Panguru - a Māori and Katorika Community in the Hokianga. The richness of both cultures has helped shape my identity, authenticity, sense of wonder, curiosity and whakapapa to this day.
My experience
I am learning more about indigenous ways of knowing as I travel around the world.
I started running when I was 48 years old. My university professor decided she wanted to celebrate her 60th birthday with a marathon (42.2k). Unfortunately, she was determined and I supported her to achieve her goal. My friend moved on, and I stayed with the Marathon Club. I became the Race Director for the WhyWomenRun Women's Event, and my travels took on a new meaning.
Running is an excuse to connect with people (whakawhanaunga) and support, (manaaki) diverse communities around the world and in Aotearoa. This āwhina takes many forms.
I get to work with Race Directors to discern more inclusive, accessible and sustainable ways for locals to participate in community events and/or for internationals (manuhiri) to contribute to projects to improve the infrastructure of the community.
I loved the Arts, the Cinema, Dancing and Cooking.
